Fireman Visit

Last week, during chapel at Reagan's school, the local firemen came for a visit. Gracyn and I stuck around. We learned fire safety tips, the girls got to talk to the firemen up close with their gear on and we got to explore the truck. Our little town has recently had several house fires caused by lightening, so we were all ears and especially attentive as we learned from them this year.

The recent fires and their visit did prompt me to do some inspection of the smoke detectors in our house. What I found was not good and even prompted me to call the inspector, who toured our home when we bought it a year ago. Including the basement, we have a little over 4000 square feet in 3 levels. I was a little surprised to realize we only had 3 alarms in all that area, one on each floor. The inspector informed me that our area of Cincinnati didn't have any codes regarding the number of fire alarms required in a house until very recently (a very clear example of how the Mid-West can be a few years behind the rest of the world). Unfortunately if your house was built before the codes were established, it is not required to meet the standard. So, our house does indeed pass inspection with so few alarms. Pass, yes. Safe, no. Tommy spent a good part of Friday afternoon installing 4 additional smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Thanks firemen for your visit and for prompting us to get things done around our house!
